Health and Care Databases

If you need to carry out an in-depth search that is robust and reproducible then you will need to use one or more of the available health and care databases. These databases are bibliographic and allow for advanced searching to be carried out. If you just need to carry out a simple search or are just starting your research then you may find our Knowledge and Library Hub a good starting point.

The following bibliographic databases with various topic coverage are currently available to all NHS staff and students:

CINAHL (EBSCOHost)– nursing and allied health

Education Research Index (ProQuest) – Combines two powerful education research indexes, ERIC and the Supplemental Education Index. The unified indexes allow users to search all content via the ERIC thesaurus creating a unified research experience.

Embase (Ovid) – biomedical and pharmaceutical literature

Emcare (Ovid) – nursing and allied health

HMIC (Ovid) – healthcare management

Medline (Ovid) – biomedical, life sciences, allied health and pre-clinical sciences literature

One Health and Nursing (ProQuest) – A multi-format collection of peer-reviewed journals, dissertations, clinical skills videos, and other resources for students, researchers, faculty, and practitioners.

Psychology and Behavioural Sciences (EBSCO) – Database covering psychology and behavioural sciences

PsycInfo (Ovid) – psychology, behavioural sciences and related disciplines

Social Policy and Practice (Ovid) – behavioural and social sciences, social work and public health
